Speaking Truth to Power: MEDIA JUSTICE IN OUR COMMUNITIES

The Conference is hosting an amazing line-up of activists, scholars, media makers, community organizers, musicians, filmmakers, artists, journalists and many more, of all ages! Participants can choose from over 40 workshops and panels conducted by more than 50 local organizations on topics ranging from how to produce activist video to how to use that video to fight for policy changes. We’ll discuss how the internet and social networking is changing the way we communicate. You’ll learn how to find real election coverage and the best independent journalism. And we’ll strategize how we can begin to create media systems that come from, and are responsive to the people.

Third World Newsreel - Free Workshops

THE TWN EVENING SEMINARS
THE WINTER 2007 EDITION

Walk-in seminars on film/video/digital production topics from funding to sound and more! Professionals in the field provide down to earth “how-to’s” for the independent media-maker. Workshops start at 6:30 PM.
All Classes $25 ($15 student/low income) unless otherwise noted.

Wednesday, January 31st: FREE WORKSHOP
VISITING FILMMAKER: VA-MEGN THOJ
Both a documentary and narrative filmmaker as well as a community activist, Va-Megn makes films in and about the Hmong community. Right now, he is working on a feature that seems ripped from the headlines, but actually predates them - the controversial “hunter shooting” in Wisconsin that draws on race, class and the Vietnam war. He will show some clips and talk about the making of his film and filmmaking in the Hmong community.
This workshop is free.

Tuesday, February 6th :
INTRO TO SOUND RECORDING
The basics of recording, microphone types, recorders and mixers, working with large and small format cameras, and how to avoid heartache at the mix. Bring your questions. With JT Takagi.

Tuesday, February 13th :
COMPOSING THE IMAGE - AND PLANNING FOR THE NEW CAMERA TECHNOLOGY
Feature film director/cinematographer Arthur Jafa (Crooklyn, Daughters of the Dust) and commercial DP, will show clips and talk about creating a personal vision, his methodology for approaching shooting a film and the hot new cameras and accessories that are changing almost every aspect of production and distribution.

Tuesday, February 20th:
GETTING THE MONEY! - PROPOSALS and GRANT WRITING
It’s the proposal, the sample, it’s the meet and greet. Tips on putting together a winning package. With Dorothy Thigpen, ED at ThirdWorldNewsreel.

Wednesday, February 28th :
DEMYSTIFYING DISTRIBUTION
A primer on planning your film release - from marketing tips to festivals, with the New School Professor and Marketing expert, Michelle Materre.
